Hawkeyes Compete Against Quality Competition at Dale England Cup

April 28, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. —The University of Iowa women’s rowing team placed second overall at the fifth annual Dale England Cup on April 26-27 at Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind. The competition included boats from Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame and Alabama.

The Hawkeyes finished second in the final team standings with 98 points. Notre Dame earned first place with 118 points to take home the Dale England Cup Trophy. Indiana finished third with 84 points and Alabama was fourth with 60 points.

Overall, Iowa coach Steve Pritzker was happy to get in good, quality races against some top teams.

“It was great to get three races in such a short period of time,” said Pritzker. “Friday’s races against Indiana showed some growth from our team. Saturday morning we faced a top 10 team in Notre Dame and the disparity showed the progress we still need to make. Saturday afternoon brought incredibly gusty conditions and we were lucky to get the races off against Alabama. Our athletes handled the conditions as well as we could have hoped for. We look forward to the Big Ten Championships in three weeks.”

The third Varsity 4 was the first competition for the Hawkeyes Friday afternoon. Iowa placed first with a time of 08:11.5, ahead of Indiana and Notre Dame.

In the second Varsity 4, Iowa crossed the line behind Indiana with a time of 08:12.7. In the first Novice 8, Iowa was also second behind Indiana, with a time of 07:23.9.

Iowa then finished ahead of Indiana in the remaining varsity events of the day. The Hawkeyes claimed the first Varsity 4 with a time of 07:49.5, 5.4 seconds ahead of Indiana. In the second Varsity 8, Iowa finished 6.2 seconds ahead of the Hoosiers with a time of 06:59.7.

The Hawkeyes concluded Friday’s races with the first Varsity 8, winning with a time of 06:56.6, ahead of Indiana’s 7:00.0.

Following Friday’s events, Iowa was in third place with 58 points. Tenth-ranked Notre Dame was first with 80 points, followed by Indiana with 62 points and Alabama with 40.

Saturday’s competition began with the 4’s events. In the second Varsity 4, the Hawkeyes were first with a time of 08:16.0, followed by Notre Dame’s `A’ and `B’ boats. In the first Novice 8, the Hawkeyes were 12.5 seconds behind Notre Dame’s boat `A’ and 13 seconds ahead of Notre Dame’s boat `B’. Iowa placed ahead of both Notre Dame and Indiana in the third Varsity 4 with a time of 9:15.9.

In the first Varsity 4 event, Iowa placed third with a time of 08:02.4, placing behind both Notre Dame boats. Iowa’s first and second Varsity 8s both fell to Notre Dame to conclude the morning events. Iowa’s 2V8 boat posted a time of 7:13.4, 15 seconds behind Notre Dame, while the 1V8 boat posted a time of 7:01.1, 15.3 seconds behind.

Despite an increasing cross head wind of 10-20 mph for the final session, Iowa was able to sweep Alabama in the five Saturday afternoon events.

Iowa claimed the second Varsity 4 in a time of 9:25.0 and the first Varsity 4 in a time of 9:28.2. In the first Novice 8 Iowa’s winning time was 8:19.7. In the final two events for the Hawkeyes, the second Varsity 8 won with a time of 8:15.3, 15.7 seconds ahead of Alabama. The first Varsity 8 placed first in a time of 7:44.0, 27.5 seconds ahead of the Crimson Tide.
