Hawkeyes Finish 6th at Day One of the Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team placed sixth Friday night at the 2013 Big Ten Championships at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn. The Hawkeyes finished with a team score of 422.500.

Michigan held off second-place Penn State, finishing the competition with a score of 434.050 to win the championship. Minnesota earned a third-place finish with 430.350 points, while Ohio State came in fourth with 426.600 points. Illinois came in fifth (424.450) and Nebraska (416.250) rounded out the team standings in seventh.

Iowa held first after five rotations, before finishing with a 66.200 on pommel horse.

Senior Javier Balboa registered Iowa’s highest finish of the night, scoring 84.750 to place third in the all-around. Senior Broderick Shemansky finished sixth (83.060), Jack Boyle finished 10th (81.500), and Lance Alberhasky finished 11th (80.900).

The Hawkeyes totaled a 72.000 on floor exercise. Matt Loochtan was Iowa’s top finisher, scoring 15.150 to finish in sixth place. Boyle and Brandon Field also were among top-20 finishers. Both scored a 14.500 to tie for 19th place. Grant Perdue of Nebraska and Stacey Ervin of Michigan tallied a 15.500 to tie for the event title.

Eric Lofstrom took 11th place on pommel horse with a score of 14.050. Shemansky tied for 14th with Ohio State’s Alex Nork (13.800). As a team, Iowa finished with a 66.200 on pommel. Craig Hernandez of Penn State took the event title with a score of 15.250.

The Hawkeyes had three gymnasts among the top twenty on rings. Anton Gryshayev led the way in 10th place (14.900), followed by Balboa tying for 11th place with Sam Mikulak of Michigan (14.850). Boyle earned a 14.350 to tie for 19th with Illinois’ Max Mayr. As a team, Iowa notched 72.750 on the event.

Loochtan placed ninth on vault with a score of 14.950. Cyrus Dobre-Mofid finished with a score of 14.650 to tie Alexis Torres of Penn State. Illinois’ Fred Hartville took first place on vault. The Hawkeyes finished the event with a 72.050. Dobre-Mofid led Iowa on parallel bars with a 14.600 to finish 10th. Balboa followed closely behind in a three-way tie for 11th place with a score of 14.550. Mitchell Landau finished in 19th (14.350). Michigan’s Sam Mikulak took the event title with a score of 15.950. As a team, the Hawkeyes scored a 71.250 on parallel bars.

Iowa tallied a 68.250 on the horizontal bar. Landau scored a 14.650 to earn fifth place. Shemansky followed with a 14.350 to tie for sixth. Balboa scored a 13.760 to round out the top-20 in a three-way tie. Iowa finished horizontal bar with a 68.250.

The final session of the 2013 Big Ten Championships, featuring the individual event finals, is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT). The top 10 individual finishers in each of Friday’s events advance to Saturday’s finals, which will be broadcasted live on BTN.
