Balboa, Shemansky Named All-Big Ten

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team competed in the final session of the 2013 Big Ten Championships on Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn. Seniors Javier Balboa and Broderick Shemansky were named first team All-Big Ten.

Shemansky earns his second career all-conference selection, as he was also named All-Big Ten last year. Freshman Eric Lofstrom was a Sportsmanship Honoree. Six Hawkeyes placed among the top ten in the individual event competition.

Balboa was named Big Ten Champion on still rings as he scored a 15.500. Tonight’s victory marks the former Big Ten Athlete of the week’s second-straight rings title. Classmate Anton Gryshayev earned a 15.125 to place fourth on the event.

Shemansky and sophomore Mitchell Landau earned seventh and eighth place respectively on the horizontal bar with scores of 14.300 and 14.250. Michigan’s Sam Mikulak won first place with a score of 15.700.

Freshman Matt Loochtan led the Hawkeyes on floor exercise, placing seventh with a score of 14.400. Michigan’s Stacey Ervin took the event title with a 15.800.

Loochtan earned sixth place in the vault finals with a 14.525. Fred Hartville of Illinois took the title with a score of 15.425.

Redshirt freshman Cyrus Dobre-Mofid tallied a 14.575 on the parallel bars to earn fourth place. Syque Caesar of Michigan scored 15.025 to win the event.

Balboa also finished third in the all-around during Friday night’s session, and Shemansky finished sixth.
