COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Iowa women’s track and field team tallied six team points on day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday. The women are in sixth-place, while the men remain scoreless after two scored events.
Two Hawkeyes scored points in the women’s hammer throw. Ashlyn Gulvas grabbed a fifth-place finish. The junior recorded a personal-best toss of 189-6 (57.76m). That mark ranks third all-time at Iowa. Junior Jasmine Simpson earned a seventh-place finish with a mark of 186-1 (56.73m). Annemie Smith also competed in the event. The sophomore finished ninth with a toss of 183-2 (55.83m). Senior Ben Stancombe finished 13th in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 190-3 (58.00m).
Kevin Lewis ran to an 11th-place finish in the men’s 10,000 meters. The sophomore clocked a time of 30:15.29. Senior Jon Michael Brandt also competed in the event. Brandt clocked a time of 30:54.14 to finish 15th.
Senior Kyle Reid and junior Jack Eckert both competed in the first day of the men’s decathlon. Reid recorded personal bests in the 100 meters (10.95; 3rd), long jump (21-6 ¼; 6.56m; 15th), and shot put (37-10 ½; 11.54m; 14th). Reid also finished second in the 400 meters when he crossed the line in 49.34. The senior sits in 13th place with a total of 3,576 points.
Jack Eckert finished 12th in the shot put with a toss of 38-6 (11.73m). The junior also earned a 13th-place finish in the high jump (5-11 ½; 1.82m), and 17th-place finishes in the long jump (19-11; 6.07m), 100 meters (11.74) and 400 meters (52.70). Eckert is in 14th place with a total of 3,233 points.
The Big Ten Outdoor Championships resume Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (CT).
