AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Iowa track and field team advanced four student-athletes to the NCAA final site and sent two more to the national quarterfinals following Day 2 of competition at the 2013 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships. The West Preliminary Round, hosted by Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, was delayed more than eight hours today due to inclement weather.
When competition resumed, Iowa’s Jordan Mullen punched his ticket to the quarterfinals of the 110-meter hurdles with a first place finish in his heat. Mullen ran a 13.93 to grab the fifth overall spot in tomorrow’s quarters.
Justin Austin also advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinals, grabbing the top overall spot in the 200 meters with a time of 20.57. Earlier in the evening, Austin punched his ticket to Eugene, Ore., the final site of the NCAA Championships, by placing second in his heat in the 100 meters. Austin and teammate Josh Larney both earned automatic bids to the NCAA final site by posting identical times of 10.52.
Ethan Holmes is also headed to Eugene following a personal-best performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Holmes grabbed the 12th and final at-large berth by turning in a time of 50.51. Holmes has advanced to the NCAA final site in each of the last three seasons.
Majesty Tutson will make her first career appearance in the NCAA finals following a sixth place finish in the women’s discus. Tutson hit a mark of 175-00 (53.33m) on her third attempt to earn the automatic bid to Eugene.
