Hawkeyes Down Kirkwood

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team downed Kirkwood Community College, 17-7 in 14 innings, on Friday night at Duane Banks Field.

In the first nine innings, the Hawkeyes plated all 13 runs over the final four frames to rally from a 5-0 deficit. Iowa plated six runs on seven hits in the seventh frame before following with five runs in the eighth.

The Hawkeyes pounded out 18 hits in the contest and seven players tallied multi-hit games. Sophomore Nick Roscetti and senior Bryan Niedbalski both paced the team with three hits, going 3-for-5 and 3-for-4, respectively. Niedbalski also had three RBIs and a run scored.

Juniors Jake Mangler (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Taylor Zeutenhorst (2-for-6), Eric Toole (2-for-6, 1 run), Nick Day (2-for-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI) and sophomore Tyler Peyton (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run) all had two-hit games.

On the mound, 7-of-8 Iowa pitchers allowed zero runs. Junior Sasha Kuebel threw the first two innings, allowing one hit.

In the second five-inning stretch, the Hawkeyes downed Kirkwood, 4-1, without getting a single hit. Iowa plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sophomore Jared Mandel and juniors Will Polley and Jacob Sharp all tossed scoreless innings.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Oct. 4, hosting Iowa Central Community College at 4 p.m. (CT) at Banks Field.
