Sept. 9, 2013

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is currently fifth in the field of 13 teams after 36 holes of play at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club. The Hawkeyes carded a two-round team total of 617 (+41), only three strokes behind fourth place Missouri State.

“We came out and played very strong on the front nine both rounds today,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “We need to make some adjustments for the back nine.”

Iowa fired a first round total of 306 (+18) and sat in third place after 18 holes of play. The Hawkeyes carded a 311 (+23) in the second round to finish the day in fifth place.

Senior Karly Grouwinkel sits in 10th place to pace the Hawkeyes. Grouwinkel carded a 36-hole score of 149 (+5) to contribute to Iowa’s low morning total. The Mount Prospect, Ill., native started off strong on the front nine, firing two under par. She bogeyed six of the nine holes on the back nine to finish four over for the first round. Grouwinkel was consistent in the second round, shooting a 73 (+1).

Junior Shelby Phillips also finished the day among the top-20. Phillips fired a 153 (+9) to tie for 14th place. Phillips shot par on the front nine during both rounds.

The third counting score for the Hawkeyes was recorded by junior Lauren English who sits tied for 23rd, shooting a 157 (+13). Sophomore Briana Midkiff’s score of 160 (+16), which ties her for 34th, rounded out Iowa’s team total.

Freshman Allison Lindley is competing as an individual and sits tied for 14th. Lindley posted even par on the front nine in both rounds and ended the day shooting 153 (+9).

“I am very pleased with Karly and Allison’s play today,” said Menzel. “They both stayed committed all day and showed some great composure on the golf course. It is so early in the season; this team will get a lot better.”

Freshman Jessie Sindlinger fired a 163 (+19) in her Hawkeye debut and sits tied for 42nd place.

The final round of the Chip-N-Club Invitational begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The link for live score updates is available on the Iowa women’s golf schedule page.
