Oct. 1, 2013

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – University of Iowa women’s tennis players Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch defeated Jen Pfeifler and Jackie Kasler of Auburn, 8-2, today in the first round of the Qualifying Doubles bracket at the 2013 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

The Auburn duo is the No. 23-ranked doubles team in the country and the No. 6 seed in the Qualifying Doubles bracket.

“We played well today in doubles against a strong Auburn team,” said head coach Katie Dougherty. “Morven and Ruth did a great job being aggressive and striking first. It was a good first day for us out here and we’re looking forward to playing a very talented Texas team tomorrow morning. We still have a lot of opportunities ahead of us.”

The Hawkeye duo, ranked No. 28 nationally, returns to action in the second round tomorrow at 10 a.m. (PT), where they will square off against Texas’ Breaunna Addison and Pippa Horn, the No. 41-ranked doubles team in the country.

Seaborne also earned a victory in singles play before being defeated in the second round of the Qualifying Singles bracket today. Entering the first round as the No. 65-ranked singles player in the country, Seaborne defeated No. 54 Kelsey Laurente of Miami, 6-4, 6-3. Seaborne took a loss in the second round where she was defeated by Florida’s Belinda Woolcock, the No.7-ranked freshman/newcomer in the nation. Woolcock began the tournament in the Pre-Qualifying Singles bracket.

“Ruth played a very good first round match and was outplayed by Woolcock in the second,” said Dougherty.
