DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team finished the first day of competition at the Drake Jamboree in Des Moines on Friday.
Juniors Katie Zordani and Ellen Silver both earned a victory in singles play today. Zordani improved to 5-4 on the season after defeating Drake’s Klavdija Rebol in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. Silver, competing for the first time in three weeks, also came away with a victory in two sets by defeating Mariel Ante of Drake, 6-2, 6-2.
In the jamboree portion of doubles, freshman Aimee Tarun paired up with McKenzie Thomas of SIU-Edwardsville to defeat Katherine Nelson and Amanda Noonan of Creighton, 8-6.
“We had a couple of highlights today with Zordani and Silver picking up good wins,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “We did not play as well as we needed to today and I expect more from them tomorrow and am confident they will step up.”
The Hawkeyes return to the courts tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (CT) with a doubles match-up with the Creighton Bluejays and follow up with Bradley in doubles.
