DALLAS – The University of Iowa men’s golf team currently stands at sixth place at the Royal Oaks Invitational after the first two rounds of play on Monday. The Hawkeyes were tied for eighth place after a first round score of 359 (+4), but improved their score by 15 strokes in round two to bring their total to 703 (-7).
“Our guys stayed positive and adapted as the conditions changed throughout the day,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “We found the zone for most of the back 18 and finished with a strong team score to move up the leaderboard. We will continue to work on our individual goals and go as low as we can from the middle of the pack.”
Senior Steven Ihm posted the best score of all competing Hawkeyes, firing a 138 (-4) in the first two rounds. Ihm carded 30 pars, five birdies, and only one bogey in his first 36 holes.
Junior Ian Vandersee, who won the 2012 Royal Oaks Invitational, posted a 73 (+2) first round score, and followed it with a 68 (-3) score in the second round. Vandersee carded a team-high eight birdies in the first 36 holes, and is currently tied for 26th place.
Freshman Raymond Knoll, playing in the third event of his collegiate career, carded a two round total of 142 (E), and currently holds a tie for 33rd place.
Junior Joseph Winslow shot a two-round score of 143 (+1), and holds a tie for 37th place.
Junior Brian Bullington improved the most from round one to round two, besting his first round score of 76 (+5) by eight strokes with a 68 (-3) in the second round. Bullington is currently tied for 43rd.
Sophomore Nate Yankovich tied Ihm for the best first round score for the Hawkeyes, carding a 70 (-1). The Blacklick, Ohio, native fired a second-round 76 (+5), and is currently tied for 61st place.
The Royal Oaks Invitational allows teams to play six golfers, while counting five scores. Five of the six Hawkeyes playing in the event carded second round scores that were better than their previous round. Iowa posted a better day one score than three teams ranked in the Golfstat.com Top 50.
Iowa will begin their third round of play Tuesday morning, with tee times ranging from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. (CT). Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
