DALLAS – The University of Iowa men’s golf team tied for sixth place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Tuesday, finishing with a seven-under-par 1,058 (359-344-355). The Hawkeyes held sole possession of sixth place after the first two rounds, and posted an even-par 355 on Tuesday to maintain their spot in the standings.
Senior Steven Ihm posted the lowest score for the Hawkeyes, tying for tenth place with a six-under 207 (71-67-69). The Peosta, Iowa, native carded a tournament-best 44 pars in 54 holes while earning his second top-10 finish of the season.
Freshman Raymond Knoll finished in a tie for 29th, the highest finish of his collegiate career. Knoll posted rounds of 72-70-71 to finish at even par for the tournament.
Junior Ian Vandersee, winner of the 2012 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, carded a one-over 214 (73-68-73) to finish 32nd with fellow junior Brian Bullington. Bullington posted rounds of 76-68-70 while carding 11 birdies, second-most of all Hawkeye golfers.
Sophomore Nate Yankovich tied for 53rd with a six-over 219 (71-76-72). The Blacklick, Ohio, native carded a team-high 12 birdies in 54 holes, tied for eighth-most in the tournament.
Junior Joseph Winslow placed 64th in the tournament, posting a nine-over 222 (72-71-79).
“We can compete with anyone in the country, and we have over the past two weeks,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “The five teams that finished ahead of us this week will serve as motivation for us to continue our progress through the offseason. This is a great team and our time will come, individually and as a team. “
Oklahoma State took home the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate title with a 36-under 1,029 (340-349-340), successfully defending their 2012 title. The Cowboys’ Kevin Dougherty beat out teammate Wyndham Clark by one stroke to win medalist honors, carding a 11-under 202 (63-68-71).
The Royal Oaks Intercollegiate is a six-player event, and five scores count. Iowa finished ahead of two teams ranked in the Golfstat.com Top 50 in the final standings.
The Hawkeyes’ next event, The Black and Gold Alumni Match, takes place in Sarasota, Fla., on Feb. 8, 2014. Iowa then travels to Bradenton, Fla., for the Big Ten Match Play Championships on Feb. 14-15.
