IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 21st-ranked University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team dropped a 176-121 decision to No. 7 Minnesota on Friday night in a Big Ten dual at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes won five events on the evening.

“We have some work to do, but we had some great races,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We gave it our all and I do think that by the end of the year we will be a much better team, but we have room for improvement.”

Iowa got off to an exciting start in the opening race, swimming to a victory in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of junior Grant Betulius and seniors Andrew Marciniak, Dustin Rhoads, and Gianni Sesto out-touched Minnesota by eight one-hundreths of a second (1:28.63).

The Hawkeyes carried the momentum throughout much of the meet, before eventually falling to the Gophers down the stretch.

Sophomore Roman Trussov led the way for the Hawkeyes, posting two NCAA `B’ cut times. Trussov won the 100 breast in 54.37 seconds and the 200 breast in the 1:59.19, finishing two seconds better than the second place finisher.

“He is much improved compared to this time last year and that is exciting,” said Long. “It’s still individual events but a team sport, and we want to make sure we improve upon that.”

Fellow sophomore David Ernstsson posted a victory to go along with a second, and two third-place finishes. The Stockholm, Sweden, native posted a season-best time in winning the 200-free, touching out in 1:40.00. Ernstsson was also the runner-up as part of the 400-free relay (3:00.85), while finishing third in the 100 free (45.65) and as a member of the 200-medley relay (1:30.73).

Iowa had strong showings in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, finishing with four of the top five times in both events. Trussov notched the victory, followed by a runner-up showing by Marciniak (55.77), a fourth-place (56.09) finish from sophomore Quillian Oak, and a fifth-place finish from sophomore Mike Nelson (57.20).

In the 200-breast, Trussov won the title, followed by Nick Zito (2:01.43) in second, Oak in fourth (2:03.64) and Marciniak in fifth (2:05.33).

Rhoads tallied the fifth Iowa win, swimming to a victory in the 100-backstroke with an NCAA “B” cut time of 48.42 seconds. Betulius finished third (49.33), while sophomore Matthew Boyd was fourth (50.55).

In the 50 free, sophomore Jackson Allen was the runner-up in 20.83 seconds, followed by third and fourth place showings from Charles Holliday (20.91) and Zito (21.02).

In the diving well, sophomore Addison Boschult posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1-meter (300.00) and 3-meter (291.68) springboards.

The Hawkeyes (1-2) return to action Nov. 8, facing Purdue and Ohio State in West Lafayette, Ind.
