CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Riding a double-double by point guard Samantha Logic, the University of Iowa women’s basketball team returned to the win column with a 67-60 road victory at Northern Iowa on Sunday in the McLeod Center.

Logic scored 17 points with 10 rebounds to pace the Hawkeyes (5-1 overall), who bounced back from their first road loss of the season Wednesday at Colorado. Northern Iowa is 2-3.

“It is so impressive, her rebounding, she shoots the ball,” UI head coach Lisa Bluder said of Logic. “Sam is our leader, she is the person we look to and love to have her out on the floor, but she is out on the floor for a long time.”

The contest is the first for the mythical Iowa state championship. Iowa plays at Iowa State on Dec. 12 and hosts Drake on Dec. 21.

Iowa led by as many as 10 points in the first half (13-3) and 13 in the second half (42-29). Overall it was a cold shooting game for both teams. The Hawkeyes, who were held more than 14 points below their season average, made 20-of-60 field goals (33.3 percent), 3-of-18 from 3-point range (16.7) and an uncharacteristically low 24-of-38 from the line (63.2). Northern Iowa was 19-of-61 from the field (31.1) and was forced into 18 turnovers.

“UNI hasn’t been shooting the ball well this year, especially from 3-point range and we were lucky that trend continued tonight, because we didn’t shoot the ball well either,” Bluder said. “I am really concerned about our free throw shooting because we have traditionally been a very good free throw shooting team. Getting to the free throw line for 38 opportunities, we have to make them pay; had we made our free throws this wouldn’t have even been a contest at the end.”

Ally Disterhoft scored 14 points with seven rebounds for the Hawkeyes and Bethany Doolittle added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Even though Iowa struggled at the line, Logic sank 8-of-11 free throws.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Amber Sorenson with 15 points and Stephanie Davison with 12. Hannah Schonhardt of the Panthers grabbed 10 rebounds.

Iowa improved to 17-2 in the series against Northern Iowa, with seven wins in a row and nine straight in Cedar Falls.

The Hawkeyes are off to the Cancun Challenge from Nov. 28-30, where they will play three games in three days, beginning with Southern California on Thanksgiving Day at 7:30 p.m. (CT).

“Big week for us, there will be a lot of games and a lot of travel,” Bluder said.
