IOWA CITY, Iowa — It’s official, the Hawkeyes are going bowling. The University of Iowa football team used a potent rushing attack to put up 24 second half points en route to a 38-14 rout of Purdue on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium.
“We certainly don’t take bowls for granted,” said UI head coach Kirk Ferentz. “Last year serves as a quick reminder. We’re pleased to be at that point, but we still have two games left. The thing is how much better can we get? We improved in the second half, and we still have a lot to work on and that will be our focus this week.”
The Hawkeyes rushed for a season-high 318 yards — the fourth-most in a game under Ferentz — had 28 first downs and racked up 509 yards of total offense. Iowa’s defense surrendered 266 yards, including just 53 on the ground.
“The guys responded in the second half,” said Ferentz. “They played with good focus, took care of business and execution. The defense played well, and it’s a good team win. We needed that badly being on the road, and there’s nothing like going into a bye off a win.”
Sophomore Jordan Canzeri nearly matched his season rushing total in the game, piling up 165 yards on 20 carries with a score. He entered the contest with 173 yards on 29 carries. Junior Damon Bullock averaged 8.5 yards per attempt, finishing with 85 yards on 10 touches.
“Jordan gave us a nice change of pace out there and ran tough,” said Ferentz. “It was great to see him give us a spark.”

Sophomore Jake Rudockcompleted 12-of-20 passes for 191 yards with two touchdowns, while senior Don Shumpert had two catches for 69 yards. Tight end George Kittle had a career-best three receptions for 37 yards.
Senior Christian Kirksey paced the Hawkeye defense with eight tackles (seven solo) and a fumble recovery. Iowa finished with 11 tackles for loss and two sacks in the game. Junior Mike Hardy had six tackles (three TFL), while sophomore Drew Ott had five stops (three TFL).
Purdue quarterback Danny Etling completed 15-of-28 passes for 145 yards with one touchdown, running back Brandon Cottam had 12 attempts for 28 yards, and Danny Anthrop had four receptions for 82 yards and a score.
With Purdue driving for a potential game-tying score, Iowa’s defense shifted the game’s momentum early in the third quarter when senior B.J. Lowery stripped Boilermaker running back Raheem Mostert and Kirksey recovered the fumble, giving Iowa possession at its own 29.
It was potentially a 14-point swing, as Iowa’s offense drove 71 yards — all on the ground — over eight plays to push the Hawkeye advantage to 21-7 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. Canzeri opened the drive with a 16-yard gain on first down, but Shumpert saved the possession, recovering a fumble on the play at midfield.
Iowa imposed its will at the line of scrimmage, opening holes for rushing gains of 11, 15 and 12 yards down to the Purdue 13. After a 5-yard false start penalty, Canzeri ran for 6 to the 12, Bullock followed with 8 to the four and junior Mark Weisman scored from 4 yards out.
The Hawkeyes stretched their lead to 24-7 with a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 28-yard Mike Meyer field goal. Rudock opened the drive with a 14-yard completion to Kittle on first down, but the play was negated due to an illegal block in the back.
Iowa then took to the ground using rushes of 4, 4, 6, and a 12-yard Canzeri spurt to advance to midfield. On the next play, Rudock connected with Kittle for a second time, this time for 19-yards to the Purdue 31. The Hawkeyes drove down to the 10, and had a touchdown pass dropped in the end zone on third-and-6, forcing Iowa to settle for three points.
Iowa tacked on its fourth touchdown following a four-play Purdue drive that lost 11 yards. After taking over at its own 33, the Hawkeyes drove 67 yards over six plays to push their lead to 31-7 with 6:29 remaining. Canzeri opened the drive with an 18-yard gain to midfield before Rudock connected with Shumpert for a 35-yard gain off play action into the red zone.
Four plays later, play action paid off again when Rudock found Jake Duzey in the flat for a 3-yard touchdown, where he walked into the end zone for the score. It was Duzey’s second touchdown reception on the year.
Second-string quarterback C.J. Beathard led Iowa on its final scoring drive, a six-play, 27-yard drive to make the score 38-7. Freshman LeShun Daniels, Jr., had five consecutive carries for 27 yards to open the drive before Beathard scored on a naked boot from 5-yards out to give the Hawkeyes a 38-7 lead.
Purdue back-up quarterback Austin Appleby led the Boilermakers on a six-play, 67-yard scoring drive on its final possession. On fourth-and-2 from the Iowa 44, Appleby connected with Anthrop for a 44-yard touchdown pass, making the score, 38-14.
After a scoreless first quarter, Iowa notched the game’s first touchdown courtesy of a nine-play, 90-yard scoring drive. Canzeri opened with runs of 7 and 6 yards to the Iowa 23 before Rudock connected with tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz for a 13-yard gain to the 36.
On the next play, Iowa sucked in the Boilermaker defense with play action, and Rudock found Shumpert for a 34 yard gain to the Purdue 30. The Hawkeyes then pounded the ball into the end zone, using three backs for six carries. Canzeri made the score 7-0 with a touchdown run from 2-yards out.
Following a five-play Purdue drive, the Boilermakers forced the game’s first turnover. Purdue punter Cody Webster booted a punt into the wind for 37 yards, but Iowa’s Kevonte Martin-Manley miss-judged his fair catch attempt, which allowed Purdue to recover the fumble at the Iowa 35.
The Boilermakers converted the miscue into points, covering the 35 yards in six plays. On third-and-6, Etling connected with Akeem Hunt for a 26 yard gain on a screen pass to the 5. Three plays later, Etling was hit by Iowa defensive lineman Carl Davis as he threw, but hit fullback Kurt Freytag out of the backfield for a 2-yard touchdown pass.
The points were the first for the Boilermakers in 144 minutes of action dating back to Oct. 12, and the possession in the red zone was Purdue’s first since Sept. 28.
The Hawkeyes had an answer to take a 14-7 lead into the half, using a 10-play, 67-yard drive scoring drive. Canzeri gave Iowa a burst to start the drive with rushes of 6 and 15 yards to the Purdue 46. On first-and-15 from the 30, Rudock missed a wide open Martin-Manley in the corner of the end zone.
Two plays later, Rudock made up for misfire, zipping a laser to Martin-Manley for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 remaining in the half. Rudock’s throw split a pair of Purdue defenders — Ricardo Allen and Antoine Lewis.
Iowa doubled up the Boilermakers offensively in the first half, holding a 250-119 advantage in total offense. Canzeri had a season-high 75 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown over the opening 30 minutes.
The Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-3) are idle next week. Iowa returns to action Nov. 23, hosting Michigan inside Kinnick Stadium. Game time has yet to be announced.
