BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University women’s basketball team made 11 3-point field goals and held on to defeat the University of Iowa, 86-84, on Wednesday in Assembly Hall in a Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
The Hoosiers snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series to improve to 14-0 on the season; No. 22 Iowa is 12-3.
While Indiana shot 47.8-percent from 3-point land, the Hawkeyes were 3-of-17 from long range (17.6 percent).
Iowa dug itself out of a double-digit deficit in the second half and cut Indiana’s lead to two points with two minutes to play (74-72) on a layup by Samantha Logic; she made a 3-point field goal with 29 seconds left to pull the Hawkeyes within 83-81.

“We shouldn’t be getting ourselves down by 12 points. We came out with a very lackluster beginning to this game,” UI head coach Lisa Bluder said. “We can’t wait until desperation time (to make a comeback), we have to play like that the entire time.”
Logic led all players with 25 points, making 9-of-15 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws. She added 12 rebounds. Bethany Doolittle made 10-of-15 field goals for 20 points and six blocked shots before fouling out with 4:41 remaining. Ally Disterhoft (13) and Kali Peschel (10) also scored in double figures for the Hawkeyes.
“(Sam) did a great job leading us again, but we need other people to step up,” Bluder said. “There were a lot of blank looks out there, a lot of lack of emotion out there and that’s not like us. We play with great emotion and we’re good when we play with emotion. We didn’t have it right from the start and I don’t know why.”
Iowa held a shooting advantage from the field (50.0-43.8) and the line (65.5-57.6), but the Hoosiers’ production from outside proved to be the difference.
Indiana used a deep bench to its advantage. Eleven Hoosiers committed 19 fouls, whereas eight Hawkeyes were whistled 26 times. Doolittle and Peschel fouled out and Logic and Theairra Taylor had four fouls apiece. Taylor led Iowa with six assists.
“Indiana’s depth hurt us, they had more fouls to give, we got in foul trouble,” Bluder said. “I’m disappointed in the defensive effort of our basketball team.”
The Hawkeyes host defending conference champion No. 15 Penn State (9-3) on Sunday, Jan. 5, on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT).
“We’re going to need a lot of crowd there,” Bluder said. “Penn State is a tremendous team. We need a great performance against them. We have to get this (loss) back and the only way we can redeem ourselves is by coming out and playing well against Penn State. A great crowd would certainly help us with that.”
