Hawkeyes Hang Tough, Fall 4-0

Feb. 1, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team suffered a tough loss to the lady Tigers of Memphis on Saturday. The Hawkeyes fell 4-0 on the University of Oklahoma campus.

“The growth in this team in the three short weeks since we were at Northwestern is significant,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “We’ve gotten better every match and were in there today.”

Senior Ruth Seaborne and junior Morven McCulloch suffered their first doubles loss of the spring on Saturday, falling to Memphis’ Alyssa Hibberd and Caroline Wegner, 6-4. Iowa’s Annette Dohanics and Ellen Silver were up 4-2 against Marta Morga and Skylar Kuykendall of the Lady Tigers before the match was abandoned.

Iowa was poised to make a comeback in singles. The Hawkeyes took the first set of three matches early on, but Memphis went on to win three in singles. Junior Katie Zordani and sophomore Annette Dohanics both won their first sets before having their matchups abandoned.

“Memphis is a very good team. We took three first sets to put ourselves in a position to win,” said Dougherty.

The Hawkeyes are back in Iowa City next weekend to take on a pair of ranked opponents. Iowa squares off with No. 72 Oregon on Friday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. (CT) and No. 74 DePaul on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. (CT).
