24 Hawkeyes to Watch
DES MOINES — The No. 55 University of Iowa men’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 65 Drake Wednesday evening at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Hawkeyes fall to 5-2 (1-0) while the Bulldogs improve to 7-4 (0-0).
“Drake is a very good team and we saw that tonight,” said UI head coach Steve Houghton. “It is probably a top 20-30 team, and certainly played like one tonight.”
Iowa opened play failing to gain the doubles point for the first time this season. Drake secured victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, while the No. 2 match against seniors Jonas Dierckx and Juan Estenssoro went unfinished with Drake leading 7-4.
Drake carried the momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Dierckx and Estenssoro were both able to get to a tiebreak in their respective matches, before eventually falling. The Hawkeyes have little time to dwell on the loss, however, as they face a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 28.
“We have a lot of improving to do, and will be able to do that in practice as well as in matches. Regardless of who your opponent is, getting on the courts will give you the chance to improve upon your game, and that is what we need to be doing right now,” said Houghton.
Iowa will face North Dakota at 9 a.m. (CT) before taking on Creighton at 3 p.m. Both matches will take place inside the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex and are free to the public.
