IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team upset 72nd-ranked Oregon on Friday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. The Hawkeyes defeated the Ducks 5-2, handing Oregon its first loss of the dual season.

“I’m proud of how the team competed today,” said Iowa’s head coach Katie Dougherty. “They did a great job pulling out a tight doubles point and played the big points well.”

After splitting doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, senior Ruth Seaborne and junior Morven McCulloch teamed up to defeat Oregon’s Nicole Long and Jasmine Minor at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, giving the Hawkeyes the early 1-0 lead.

Junior Shelby Talcott and sophomore Annette Dohanics extended Iowa’s lead to 3-0 after they both won their singles matches in straight sets. Talcott defeated Marlou Kluiving, 6-2, 6-1, and Dohanics defeated Lina Akesson, 6-2, 6-0.

After dropping her first set against Nicole Long 6-1, Seaborne bounced back to take the second set 6-2 before falling in a heartbreaking tiebreaker 11-9. This was the third-straight singles match Seaborne had to compete in a tiebreaker.

Junior Katie Zordani and Morven McCulloch helped seal the victory for Iowa with wins at the No. 5 and No. 2 positions propelling Iowa to a 5-1 lead.

Sophomore Caitlin Hindmarsh went toe-to-toe with Oregon’s Sofia Hager in the first two sets before falling in the tiebreaker 10-4.

The Hawkeyes return to the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center for a rematch with 74th-ranked DePaul on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
