SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State defeated the University of Iowa softball team, 4-0, on Wednesday night. The Bobcats limited the Hawkeyes two hits and allowed four to reach base in the contest.
Hawkeye leadoff hitter Brianna Luna opened the game with a double to right center — her first extra base hit of the season. She moved up to third base on a Claire Fritsch groundout, but was left stranded as Texas State used a diving catch and a fly out to end the inning.
After starting pitcher Micaela Whitney and the Iowa defense held the Bobcats hitless and scoreless in the first, the Texas State offense came alive in the bottom of the second. A Katie Doerre solo home run started the scoring drive, and a double and a walk followed to put runners at second and third. A single to center and an Iowa miscue on the play plated two runs and chased Whitney from the circle.
Kayla Massey came on in relief and used a looking strikeout to post the first out, but a single through the right side plated a fourth Bobcat run before Iowa could end the inning with a fielder’s choice and a groundout.
Texas State’s four-run charge held up as the Hawkeyes only had two reach base in the remainder of the game. Holly Hoffman drew a two-out walk in the fifth, and Erin Erickson singled to left with two outs in the sixth, but both were left stranded on base.
Whitney (1-3) was tagged with the loss in the circle. She allowed four runs — three earned – and three hits in her one inning pitched. Massey threw the final five innings in relief for Iowa, held the Bobcats scoreless, and gave up five hits with three strikeouts.
Texas State’s Rayn House (15-7) recorded the win. She struck out seven and allowed two hits in her complete game effort.
Luna and Erickson recorded a hit apiece for the Hawkeyes, while Megan Blank and Hoffman each drew a walk to reach base.
The Hawkeyes open the Big Ten conference season with a three-game series at Illinois March 21-23. The series begins with a 4 p.m. (CT) game Friday, continues with a 1 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday, and concludes with a 1 p.m. (CT) game Sunday.
