Sowinski Among Hawkeye Alumni Running Musco XV

May 2, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa — All-American Erik Sowinski is among five Hawkeye alumni returning to Cretzmeyer Track on Saturday to compete at Musco Twilight XV.

Sowinski was a seven-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion at Iowa from 2009-12. He owns or shares seven school records, and was named an Academic All-American in 2012.

He graduated in 2012, but continues to train in Iowa City with UI assistant coach Joey Woody. His post-collegiate career includes an American record in the 600 meters and a world record in the 4×800 meter relay.

“I love Iowa City,” Sowinski said. “The community is great. I have everything I need here. Coach Woody has been great in all aspects of my life, so I call this home now.”

Sowinski, who was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2012, competes in the men’s 400 meters Saturday at 6:20 p.m. (CT). He is one of two Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in the field, and one of at least three in attendance — joining Bethany Praska and Jim Young.

Praska, the 2011 Medal of Honor recipient, will run the women’s 800 meters. She is the school record holder in the event. Jim Young, a 1959 Medal of Honor winner and former UI track and field standout, will be the Hawkeyes’ honorary referee.

Former Hawkeyes Nick Holmes (1,500 meters), Josh Larney (100 meters) and Majesty Tutson (discus) are also competing at the meet.

The 15th annual Musco Twilight is contested at the Frances X. Cretzmeyer Track. Field events start at 1 p.m. (CT). The official ceremony begins at 4:45 p.m. (CT). BTN will televise the event on a tape delay May 14.
