Burak, Grothus Earn NWCA Academic Honor

May 7, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa wrestlers Nathan Burak and Brody Grothus have been named to the 2014 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I All-Academic Team. The NWCA announced its annual awards Wednesday.

The academic team is made up of 87 total athletes, including three NCAA Champions, four NCAA runner-ups, 33 All-Americans and 77 NCAA Qualifiers.

Burak, an open major, was one of the 33 All-Americans to join the list. He placed eighth at 197 pounds at the 2014 NCAA Championships and finished the year with a 19-8 record. Grothus, an interdepartmental studies major, was 24-12 overall and advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.

Both wrestlers were also academic All-Big Ten honorees. Iowa has had at least one representative on the NWCA All-Academic team every year since Tom Brands was named head coach in 2006.

“The NWCA All-Academic Team and Individual Team is one of the best acknowledgements that we can give to our coaches and athletes at the end of a physically grueling season” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “These young men have proved that they are not only talented competitors but are leaders in the classroom as well. The NWCA Board of Directors and staff look forward to watching these student-athletes continue their success at the collegiate level and eventually as the leaders of the future once they earn their college degrees.”
