Yacinich Selected in 8th Round of MLB Draft

June 6, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Jake Yacinich was selected in the eighth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The shortstop was the 239th pick overall.

Yacinich was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior — the first Hawkeye to earn first-team honors since 2009. He finished the season ranking in the top 10 in the conference in seven categories, ranking second batting average (.365), steals (25) and triples (4). Yacinich scored 45 runs, drove in 32 and posted a .447 slugging and .438 on-base percentage.

The Des Moines, Iowa, native tied for the team lead with 23 multi-hit games, which included four four-hit contests. He has 142 singles as a Hawkeye, ranking seventh in program history.

Yacinich will have the option to sign with the Angels or return to the Hawkeyes for his senior season. He helped Iowa to 30 wins in 2014 and to a berth and win in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament.

Rounds 11 through 40 of the MLB Draft will take place Saturday. Follow the picks live at MLB.com.
