IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team defeated Nebraska, 191-109, in its season-opening double dual Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. Iowa fell to Michigan, 188.5-105.5.

“Anytime we can get a win over a Big Ten opponent, it’s huge,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “The win over Nebraska is outstanding; we’re happy about that. We had some good swims against Michigan with Emma Sougstad and Becky Stoughton swimming well. Overall, we had some great racing.”
Sophomore Emma Sougstad recorded the Hawkeyes top finish, winning the 100 breast with a winning time of 1:03.26. The Forest City, Iowa, native also recorded runner-up finishes in the 100 fly (56.90) and as a member of the 200 medley relay alongside freshman Meghan Lavelle, and juniors Ashley Horodyski and Olivia Kabacinski. The quartet posted a time of 1:44.57.
Iowa collectively had nine runner-up finishes with Senior Becky Stoughton posting three of them. The Peoria, Illinois, native swam as a member of the second-place 400-free relay (3:30.10) alongside freshmen Carly O’Brien and Nikol Lagodzinska, and Kabacinski. Stoughton also took second place in the 200 free (1:50.30), and 500 free (4:54.72).
The Hawkeyes also got individual runner-up finishes from Lavelle and fellow freshman Shea Hoyt. Lavelle finished second in the 200 back (2:03.48), while Hoyt was second in the 100 breast (2:21.32). Freshman Rowan Hauber tallied a fourth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 56.07 seconds — a time that ranks ninth in Iowa history.
In the diving well the Hawkeyes picked up a top-five finish from sophomore Lydia Lehnert, who dove to a combined score of 268.30.
“Although our places weren’t quite where we wanted them, there were some bright spots from what we work on daily in practice,” said diving coach Todd Waikel. “As a coach with our development, that’s what I want to see. It was a good weekend, and I like the direction we’re headed.”
The Hawkeyes return to the pool Saturday, October 11, in the team’s annual Black and Gold Intrasquad. The competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. (CT) at the CRWC.
