IOWA CITY, Iowa — Fifty-three second half points sent the University of Iowa men’s basketball team to a 92-51 exhibition rout of Northwood (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes led 39-32 at the half before using a 19-3 run over the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half to break the game open. Iowa shot 49.3 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range, and were plus-21 on the glass, 52-31, for the game.
“Our offense ran more smoothly in the second half,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery. “It did not in the first half.”
Three Iowa players reached double figures and 13-of-14 Hawkeyes scored. Sophomore Peter Jok led the team with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds. Junior Jarrod Uthoff made 6-of-13 shot attempts and had seven rebounds and senior Aaron White scored 12 points, making 6-of-7 shots, and pulled in seven rebounds.
Senior Gabriel Olaseni and Josh Oglesby each added nine points off the bench. Oglesby wend 3-for-7 from 3-point range. Junior Anthony Clemmons finished with three points and four steals after starting the game at the shooting guard position.

“Clemmons has been the most consistent guy from the opening day of practice until now,” said McCaffery. “He earned that position.”
Iowa’s newcomers — sophomore Trey Dickerson and freshman Dom Uhl — were solid in their Hawkeye debuts. Dickerson finished with eight points, two steals, and two assists, making 3-of-4 shots, including two 3-pointers. Uhl struggled from the floor, going 2-of-9, but tied for the team high with eight rebounds.
“Trey showed a lot of good things,” said McCaffery. “He had one or two turnovers that he shouldn’t have, but he’ll load up shooters, get the ball inside and move the ball side to side like you want your point guard to do.
“You have to love Dom’s eight rebounds. We told him to get on the glass, and rebound the ball.”
After a tightly contested first half, Iowa’s defense stifled the Seahawks over the final 20 minutes. Northwood missed its first 14 shots of the second half, and finished with a 30 percent field goal percentage for the game. Iowa forced Northwood into 22 turnovers, which led to a 29-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Iowa showcased its depth with its reserves accounting for 57 points in the game. The Hawkeyes also went to the basket early and often, en route to a 44-16 advantage in points in the paint.
The exhibition contest was anything but clean on both behalves. The two teams averaged more than a turnover a minute, combining for 41 in the contest.
Northwood got off to a strong start, leading 9-6 over the first 4 1/2 minutes before Iowa came back to tie the game at 11 via a Clemmons 3-pointer at the 13:47 mark and took the lead on an Oglesby long ball a little more than one minute later.
Iowa pushed its lead to 23-14 on a Dickerson lay-up at the 9:16 mark, but Northwood stayed competitive, cutting the lead to 26-21 on a Malte Ziegenhagen 3-pointer with 7:34 left in the half. Iowa pushed its lead to 38-26 with 1:38 left in the opening half before taking a 39-32 lead into the break.
“The thing that disappointed me was when we got it to 12, and it went from 12 to six,” said McCaffery. “It has to go from 12 to 18, and that was the disappointing thing. I didn’t like the start. We softened defensively, and that’s the challenge of this team. We don’t soften at all, and that was evident in the second half.”
Uthoff sparked the Hawkeye run to start the second half, scoring nine of the team’s first 11 point over the first four minutes. Then the rout was on.
The Hawkeyes open the regular season Nov. 14, hosting Hampton at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
