IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team gathered its third home victory of the season as they trounced the Utah State Aggies 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes advance to 3-0 overall for the dual schedule.
“This was a good weekend for us and a really good test with two teams that really pushed us,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “We had our backs against the wall a few times and the team did a really good job fighting through some things and closing out matches. It gives us a lot of confidence.”
Starting No. 1 for doubles, senior Shelby Talcott and junior Annette Dohanics triumphed as a duo collecting a 6-1 victory over Utah State’s Kallie Sperry and Meghan Lyall.

The No. 3 doubles match finished in Iowa’s favor as Katie Zordani and partner Zoe Douglas defeated Sabrina Demerath and Nini Guensler (Utah State). The win clinched the point for the Hawkeyes giving them a 1-0 lead heading into singles matches.
Both Talcott and Dohanics continued their success in singles play as they overcame McKenzie Davis (Utah State), 7-6, 6-3 and Sabrina Demerath (Utah State), 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
“It’s always good to have the comfort of getting four wins on the weekend, for doubles and singles in a row, especially when we go on the road,” said senior Shelby Talcott. “It’ll definitely help (on the road) that we’re 3-0 especially to build the confidence, I think anytime you get a few wins in a row it’s going to help mentally.”
It was a battle between Zordani and singles opponent Kallie Sperry, but the Hawkeyes came out on top with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Fellow senior Ellen Silver put her singles match away with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Meghan Lyall (Utah State).
McCulloch bounced back from her doubles misstep by recording a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Utah State’s Maggie O’Meara. Doubles teammate Reimchen struggled to find a rhythm in singles play falling 7-5, 6-3 to the Aggies’ Nini Guensler.
“It’s always a battle to go on the road and I’ve heard how tough it is to play at Oregon,” Dougherty noted. “It’ll be a good test for us and give us a chance to play two quality teams.”
Iowa hits the road for its next competition, taking on the Montana Grizzlies at 12 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Feb. 14. The trip will conclude when the Hawkeyes meet the Oregon Ducks on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
