IOWA CITY, Iowa — On the back of four straight set victories in singles, the 57th-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team (8-2) bounced back from its loss to No.29 Drake University Friday with a 4-0 sweep over No.75 Louisiana University this morning at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
“Today, I thought the guys came out with great energy from the first point. The team came out and executed the game plan, they all played well. There was a lot of communicating between all the courts and we were able to start with momentum at the beginning and keep it all the way until the end,” said UI head coach Ross Wilson.

Josh Silverstein got things rolling for the Hawkeyes at the No.5 position. The freshman delivered in his match against Damian Farinola, blanking Farinola 6-0, 6-0.
At No.1 singles, senior Matt Hagan, ranked 79th nationally, made adjustments from his last match against Drake’s 55th-ranked Alen Salibasic. Hagan came out composed posting a 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory over Louisiana’s Jake Wynan. With the Hawkeyes up 2-0, freshman Stieg Martens quickly made it 3-0 in favor of Iowa. Martens registered a two set sweep 6-2, 6-2 over Vlad Kramarov.
At No.3 singles, in a match clinching performance, Lefteris Theodorou earned a pair of 6-2 set wins over Louisiana’s Edgar Lopez. Theodorou’s win gave Iowa the 4-0 advantage over Louisiana. After both winning their first sets, Dominic Patrick and Jake Jacoby’s matches were abandoned due to Iowa already earning the win.
“Keeping the momentum was the biggest difference; it let us play loose and extend leads. Every single court, one through six, once we got ahead we stayed ahead. We kept them down and finished off the matches, which was a huge improvement from the Drake match and something we need to continue to do,” added Wilson.
As a result of Iowa clinching the match in the singles portion, the doubles competition was cancelled. The Hawkeyes will have a couple weeks off before it takes its 8-2 record to San Diego, California, for a match with the 54th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs on March 16.
