IOWA CITY, Iowa — Following a 12-under-par (564) performance through two rounds at the 22nd annual Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational on Saturday, the University of Iowa men’s golf team sits in second place heading into Sunday’s final round. The two-day event is being played at the UI’s own Finkbine Golf Course.
At 13-under-par (563), in-state rival Iowa State leads the 12-team field. Wichita State’s Louis Cohen Boyer tops the individual leaderboard at 13-under-par (131).
“I thought we played well today,” said UI head coach Tyler Stith. ” The guys put themselves in good position for tomorrow’s final round.”
All five Iowa players are in the top-20 of the 66-player field. Sophomore Carson Schaake paced the Hawkeyes, carding a 73 in round one and a career best six-under-par 66 in the second. The Omaha, Nebraska, native is currently tied for fourth place.
“Carson’s 66 in today’s second round was an awesome round of golf,” said Stith.
At three strokes below par, junior Nate Yankovich is currently tied for eighth place. Yankovich registered rounds of 70 and 71.
“Nate was solid today,” said Stith. “He’s been working hard on his game. He’s playing with a lot of confidence and I’m proud of his performance today.”
Seniors Ian Vandersee and Brian Bullington each sit at one stroke under par (143) and are tied for 16th place. Vandersee carded rounds of 70 and 73, while Bullington shot a 72 in round one and a 71 in round two.
Sophomore Raymond Knoll is tied for 19th after carding back-to-back rounds of 72 to shoot even par (144) on the day.
Junior Voramate Aussarassakorn and freshmen Jack Holmgren and Sam Meuret are each competing as individuals. Aussarassakorn is tied for eighth after firing a 71 and a 70 in Saturday’s first two rounds. Meuret carded rounds of 70 and 78, putting him in a tie for 33rd, while Holmgren is tied for 63rd after first and second round totals of 80 and 78.
