CHICAGO — University of Iowa senior offensive lineman Brandon Scherff was selected by the Washington Redskins in the first round of Thursday’s NFL Draft. Scherff was the fifth player picked overall.
A native of Denison, Iowa, Scherff is the first Hawkeye offensive lineman drafted since Riley Reiff was selected in the first round by Detroit in 2012. He is the 13th Hawkeye offensive lineman — and the fourth Hawkeye first-round offensive lineman — chosen in the NFL Draft since 2000.
The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Scherff won the Outland Trophy and was named a consensus All-American after starting all 13 games in 2014 at left tackle. He had 36 total starts, including the final 26 games of his career.
Scherff was named first team All-Big Ten for a second straight season and was named Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior.
Iowa has now had at least one player drafted in every NFL Draft since 1978.
The Redskins went 4-12 last season, fourth in the NFC East Division. Washington hasn’t had a first-round pick since 2012 when it selected quarterback Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. Griffin III went on to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year after throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, and running for 815 yards.
Jay Gruden is the head coach of the Redskins, entering his second season. Washington’s offensive line coach is Bill Callahan.
The Redskins open the season Sept. 13 against Miami. Their closest game to Iowa City is Dec. 13 at Chicago.
Scherff is the 56th player coached by Ferentz at the University of Iowa to be selected in the NFL Draft.
