Three-time All-Big Ten linebacker and Hawkeye team captain Abdul Hodge joined the University of Iowa coaching staff in March 2022. Hodge coaches the tight end and fullback positions. Hodge joined the Hawkeye coaching staff after coaching at the University of South Dakota the previous three seasons.
Hodge coached outside linebackers and was the staff NFL liaison at South Dakota.
Iowa won 27 combined contests the last three seasons, including capturing the Big Ten West Division in 2023 and winning the 2025 ReliaQuest Bowl with a 34-27 win over No. 14 Vanderbilt. Iowa has been ranked in the final AP Top 25 six of the last eight seasons, including ranking No. 17 in 2025. The Hawkeyes won nine games in 2025.
Redshirt freshman DJ Vonnahme, a FWAA Freshman All-American, led the team in receptions (29), receiving yards (434) and receiving touchdowns (3) in 2025. Vonnahme had a career-high seven catches for 146 yards and one touchdown in the bowl victory, which led to him being named to The Associated Press All-Bowl Team. The 146 receiving yards are the second-most by a tight end in program history behind Marv Cook (159, 1 TD, at Ohio State in 1987).
Three of Iowa’s top six receiving targets in 2024 were tight ends with Luke Lachey (28-231), Addison Ostrenga (15-114) and Zach Ortwerth (11-133) catching a combined 54 passes.
The NFL recognized Lachey’s talents and he was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.
In his first season on the Iowa staff, Iowa won eight contests in 2022, concluding the season with a 21-0 win over Kentucky in the Music City Bowl and victories in five of its final six games. Hodge coached Sam LaPorta, who led the Hawkeyes in receiving with 58 receptions for 657 yards. LaPorta was one of three finalists for the John Mackey Award and was named the Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year. LaPorta completed his career with 153 receptions for 1,786 yards. He ranks first all-time among Iowa tight ends in receptions and second in receiving yards.
LaPorta was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the 34th overall selection. In addition, fullback Monte Pottebaum signed a free agent contract with Pittsburgh immediately following the draft.
Hodge, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Boyd Anderson High School), lettered for the Hawkeyes from 2002-05. He was a key player for the Hawkeyes in one of the most successful periods in school history, helping Iowa post a four-year mark of 38-12.
