GREENVILLE, South Carolina — University of Iowa sophomore Zoe Douglas won her 2015 singles debut in a third-set tiebreak at the Furman Fall Classic on Saturday.

Douglas dropped the first set, 6-1, before forcing a tiebreak with a 6-3 win in set two. She won the tiebreak 1-0 (5) against Alabama’s Andi Daniell to advance to the Flight 2 semifinals, where she dropped a three-set tiebreak to Clemson’s Theresa Piontek, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (4).
“I’m happy with how I played today,” said Douglas. “I had great support from my teammates and played some of my best tennis. Everyone we compete against at this tournament is a high standard and good opportunities for us.”
Freshman Taylor Tamblyn won her Hawkeye singles debut Saturday, topping Vanderbilt’s Payton Robinette in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Overall, the Hawkeyes were 2-9 against a tournament field that features six nationally ranked teams.
“We competed well today against some very good competition,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “There’s a lot we can take from matches, and we handled tricky conditions well. We’re looking forward to a strong finish tomorrow.”
The tournament concludes Sunday at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
