IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa rowing team welcomes Big Ten opponent Indiana for a pair of scrimmages on the Iowa River this Friday and Saturday. Hoosier coach Steve Peterson’s squad has finished 11th at the NCAA Championships the past two seasons and he will bring six crews to face off with the Hawkeyes over two days of scrimmaging.
“The Hoosiers have been incredibly challenging opponents over the past couple of years,” says third-year head coach, Andrew Carter. “Understanding their caliber, our crews are excited about the opportunity to measure themselves in a ‘friendly’ competition.”
On Friday afternoon at 4:30pm, the crews will scrimmage in two time-trials over 4000m. The format calls for the crews to race against the clock in a single-file “chase” format. The first of these scrimmage pieces will start at the IMU Footbridge and finish at Crandic Park near the end of Rocky Shore Drive. Fans can cheer on their Hawks from anywhere along the Iowa River but some of the best viewing will be from the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) Footbridge, the Hancher Footbridge, the Park Road Bridge, and City Park.
Saturday racing will begin at 8:00am and will incorporate several 1000m head-to-head sprints. The races will be staged in both directions between the IMU Footbridge and the Park Road Bridge and fans are encouraged to cheer on the Hawkeyes from anywhere along the shore or any of the three bridges. Best viewing will be from either the IMU Footbridge, where fans will be able to see both starts and finishes, or from the Hancher Footbridge where they’ll get great views of the entire race from the mid-way point.
