“It was a game of two halves and I thought we played well the first half,” said UI head coach Dave DiIanni. “We showed a lot of patience in the back and the midfield did a good job. The quality of soccer was much better today. Unfortunately, we didn’t show enough confidence on the ball in the second half and that created a lot of defending for us.”

The Hawkeyes were able to hold off the Badgers for the first 17 minutes of the game before Marisa Kresge received a pass from Victoria Pickett and fired into the far corner at the 18-minute mark to give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead. The Badgers tallied their second goal at the 60-minute mark when Kinley McNicoll fired a penalty kick past senior goalkeeper Hannah Clark.

The Badgers finished with a 19-4 edge in shots for the game with nine being on goal. Twelve of the 19 attempts came over the final 45 minutes.

Wisconsin’s goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem picked up her sixth shutout and the Badger’s fifth consecutive shutout this season. Clark finished with six saves in 90 minutes of action.

“We still find a way to make enough mistakes to beat ourselves, but we’re doing a lot of good things,” said DiIanni. “You can say that about the last 4-5 Big Ten games, but bottom line, we have to execute well enough to get points.”

The Hawkeyes (6-6-1, 0-5-1) return to action Sunday, hosting No. 14 Minnesota at 12 p.m. (CT).
