IOWA CITY, Iowa — Daniel Jansen’s buzzer-beater lifted NCAA Division II Augustana (South Dakota) to a 76-74 exhibition victory over the University of Iowa men’s basketball team Friday night on Mediacom Court inside Carver Hawkeye Arena.

The game-winning field goal came after the Hawkeyes erased a 15 point second half deficit to tie the game at 74 on a Peter Jok 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining. The Vikings called a timeout with 11 seconds left before putting the ball in their preseason All-American’s hands.

“It’s just the way we drew it up,” joked Augustana head coach Tom Billeter. “(He) fumbles the ball, we about dribble it off our knee to give it away and then throw it up and it goes in.”

“You have to tell Jansen, great play,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery. “We pressed up on everybody and made him use all the clock. He made a contested shot and you don’t want to foul him or give him an uncontested layup. If they’re going to beat you, it has to be a tough two. He made a tough two.”

Jansen finished with 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting for the Vikings — the No. 1 rated NCAA Division II team in the country. Forward Casey Schilling posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, helping Augustana shoot 53.6 percent in the second half and 45.5 percent for the game.

“We needed a game like this,” said McCaffery. “When you look at our schedule, we play Friday and Sunday, we have Marquette, Iowa State, Florida State, the tournament in Orlando. We better play somebody good who is going to expose some of our weaknesses as opposed to win by 25 and you don’t really know what your weaknesses are yet.

“The only downside is you can’t get your young guys in there to get their feet wet a little bit more.”

The Vikings upset bid stalled early, as Iowa jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 3 1/2 minutes and led 12-2 at the 13:42 mark. Augustana followed with 13 straight points to take a 15-12 lead with 9:50 to go in the first half.

Iowa never led again.

Augustana pushed its first half lead to as many as 11 points (40-29) before the Hawkeyes got a 3-pointer from Dale Jones and a steal and two Jok free throws to close the gap to six points at the break.

The Vikings stretched their lead to a game-high 15 points (61-46) five minutes into the second half before Iowa began making its comeback push. Back-to-back Mike Gesell layups cut the deficit to 11 with 13 minutes remaining and a jumper at the 9:51 mark trimmed the lead to seven.

Iowa trailed by six points as late as 2:15 left before an Anthony Clemmons 3-pointer cut the deficit to 74-71 with 1:37 to play. Jok had two looks from 3-point range in the final minute — the second connecting from the top of the key with 28 seconds left to tie the game at 74.

Jok led all scorers, finishing with 21 points, 14 coming in the first half. He made 7-of-18 field goals and three 3-pointers. Gesell scored 14 points and had nine assists, Uthoff had 10 points, and Woodbury grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Iowa shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) in the second half and 44.3 percent (31-of-70) for the game. Augustana out-rebounded the Hawkeyes, 42-35, and the Vikings scored 40 points in the paint.

“We missed 39 shots and only got 10 of them back,” said McCaffery. “That’s where we lost. You can look at turnovers, shots made, 3s made… they got us on the glass, that’s how they won.”

The Hawkeyes open the regular season Nov. 13, hosting Gardner-Webb at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
