WEST LAYFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team dropped a 188-112 decision at Purdue on Friday night at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Hawkeyes won four events in the dual.
“Congratulations to Purdue for out-performing us in the pool and on the boards tonight.” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We had some great individual efforts and wins, but in the end it wasn’t enough as a team. We’re eager to get better and perform better the next opportunity we get.”
Iowa opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of redshirt freshman Kenneth Mende senior Roman Trussov, sophomore Jerzy Twarowski, and senior Jackson Allen touched second with a time of 1:30.07.
Mende also posted two additional wins during the meet. The Germany native swam to a first place showing in the 100-back in 49.03 and in the 200-back in 1:49.11.
Iowa also got a pair of first-place finishes from Twarowski in the fly events. The sophomore won the 100 fly in 48.50 seconds and the 200 fly in 1:49.28.
Trussov swam to a pair of runner-up finishes. He swam into second in the 100 breast, pushing to a time of 55.49, a season-best. He was also second in the 200 breast in 2:01.25. Trussov also tallied a third-place finish in the 200 IM, swimming to a time of 1:53.68.
The Hawkeyes had a pair of swimmers tie for third place in the 200 free when senior David Ernstsson and Kyle Gannon both touched in 1:41.31. Allen, meanwhile, sprinted to a third-place finish in the 50 free in 20.75 seconds.
Junior Jackson Halsmer finished as the runner-up in the 100 free, sprinting to a time of 45.76 seconds.
Freshman Ben Colin paced the Hawkeyes in the distance events, swimming to a pair of top three finishes. He swam a season-best time in the 1,000 free (9:36.75) placing third, and touched in second place in 4:35.06 in the 500, also a season best.
Iowa closed out the night with a runner-up finish in the 400-free relay. The quartet of freshman Jack Smith, Ernstsson, freshman Matt Kamin, and Halsmer swam to a time of 3:02.14.
In the diving well, the Hawkeyes had four of the top five scores on the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Will Brenner placed second with a score of 331.20, followed by junior Brandis Heffner with a score of 323.48.
On the 3-meter Brandis Heffner took third. Heffner dove to a score of 341.55.
Iowa will return to the pool Dec. 4-6, hosting the Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. It is the team’s first championship-style meet of the season.
