Iowa Surges Into Lead at B1G Championships

NEWBURGH, Ind. — Following a big second round performance on Saturday, the University of Iowa men’s golf team has taken sole possession of first place at the Big Ten Championships. The Hawkeyes carded the lowest team score of the day with a seven-under-par 281, pushing their tournament total to 566 (-10; 285, 281).

Heading into Sunday’s final round, Iowa holds a seven-stroke lead over second-place Maryland, who sits at 573 (-3; 282, 291). Second-ranked Illinois rounds out the top three teams at 574 (-2; 279, 295).

Three Hawkeyes currently sit in the top five on the individual leaderboard, including tournament leader Carson Schaake, who holds a three stroke lead at 137 (-7; 70, 67). The junior from Omaha, Nebraska, carded a five-under-par 67 in today’s second round, the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament through two rounds. Co-medalist at last year’s Big Ten Championships, Schaake made par or better on 16 holes, including six birdies and an eagle.

Senior Nate Yankovich and freshman Matthew Walker are tied for fourth at two-under-par 142. After carding an opening round 73 (+1) on Friday, Yankovich fired a 69 (-3) in today’s second round to move up 21 spots on the individual leaderboard. Yankovich’s second round was highlighted by five birdies and a bogey-free back nine. Walker carded a one-under-par 71 for the second day in row, marking his third consecutive round of below-par golf. He made par or better on 15 holes on Saturday, including five birdies.

Sitting at one-over-par 145, junior Raymond Knoll is tied for 19th through two rounds. The Naperville, Illinois, native fired a one-under-par 71 in Friday’s opening round before carding a two-over-par 74 in Saturday’s second round. Knoll’s second round 74 included birdies on holes four, 10, and 12.

Senior Voramate Aussarassakorn is tied for 59th after carding back-to-back rounds of 79 (+7).

The Hawkeyes look to win their second Big Ten title in program history when they return to Victoria National Golf Club on Sunday morning for a final round of 18. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. (CT) off the first and 10th tees. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
