Hawkeyes Take 5th at ASU Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team concluded play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday, carding its best 54-hole team score of the year on its way to a fifth place finish. The Hawkeyes carded an 839 (-13; 277, 277, 285) at the two-day tournament, played at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course.

Iowa State claimed the team title after firing an 832 (-20; 274, 276, 282) to edge second place and 13th-ranked California by one stroke. No. 22 San Diego State finished third in the 13-team field at 835 (-17; 282, 281, 282).

Three Hawkeyes recorded top-20 finishes on Sunday, led by freshman Matthew Walker who capped off a career weekend with a third-round 70 (-1). The Ottumwa, Iowa, native finished below par in all three rounds, including a career-best 67 (-4) in the second round, on his way to a seventh place finish at 206 (-7; 69, 67, 70) — the best finish of his career. Walker has finished at or below par in four of his last six rounds.

Senior Nate Yankovich and junior Raymond Knoll both finished one stroke under par for the weekend to tie for 14th on the individual leaderboard. Yankovich carded rounds of 69 (-2), 70 (-1), and 73 (+2) on his way to his team-leading fifth top-20 finish this season. Following first and second round totals of 73 (+2) and 69 (-2), Knoll jumped 22 spots on the leaderboard after firing a one-under-par 70 in the final round. Knoll made par or better on 17 holes on Sunday, including birdies on holes seven and 14.

Junior Carson Schaake and sophomore Sam Meuret tied for 29th at 217 (+4). Schaake posted rounds of 71 (E), 74 (+3), and 73 (+2), making par or better on 13 holes in Sunday’s final round, including four birdies on the back nine. Meuret carded rounds of 68 (-3), 71 (E), and 78 (+7). The Brunswick, Nebraska, native’s third-round was highlighted by two birdies and an ace on hole seven.

Competing as an individual, freshman Aaron DeNucci tied for 66th at 232 (+19; 79, 77, 76).

The Hawkeyes return to action on April 16-17, hosting the 23rd annual Hawkeye-GRE Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. Iowa has won the event 14 different times and has crowned 13 individual champions.
