IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sophomore Nick Gallagher pitched seven shutout innings in relief to lead the University of Iowa baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Kansas State in the opening game of a Sunday doubleheader at Duane Banks Field.

The Iowa City, Iowa, native entered with two on and nobody out in the third and retired the first 13 batters he faced. Gallagher (6-2) earned his team-leading sixth victory, scattering two hits and striking out five without issuing a walk.

Kansas State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against UI starter Ryan Erickson. Tyler Wolfe doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI groundout off the bat of Quintin Crandall.
The Hawkeyes tied the game in the bottom half with a three-hit inning. Senior Jimmy Frankos and freshman Luke Farley had back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and Farley scored on an RBI single from senior Tyler Peyton.
After nine scoreless half innings, Iowa took the lead in the seventh. With one out, senior Joel Booker hit a first pitch solo home run off the Sharp Family Video Board to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead. It was Booker’s team-leading fifth home run of the game.
Iowa finished with seven hits in the contest. Booker finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for his 17th multi-hit game.
Reliever Colton Kalmus (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings. Levi MaVorhis went 4 2/3 innings in the start, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out five batters.
