Iowa Rowing Adds 2 for 2016-17

June 2, 2016

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head women’s rowing coach Andrew Carter announced the addition of Courtney Doran (Perth, Australia) and Eve Stewart (Amsterdam, Netherlands) to the program’s 2016-17 incoming class.

Doran and Stewart join fellow signees Hannah Greenlee (Ames, Iowa), Katie Pearson (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), and Elena Waiglein (Trieste, Italy). The class of five will begin training with the Hawkeyes in the fall.

“I first decided to come to the United States, as it would be a far greater experience academically and athletically compared to studying in Australia, as well as being a great life experience,” Doran said. “When I heard from the coaches and researched the university, I felt that it was the right choice for me due to the welcoming nature and competitive rowing program that will benefit me in the future.”

“I had always dreamed about attending a Big Ten university, however, as a British citizen living in the Netherlands, I had until quite recently expected to study in the United Kingdom,” Stewart said. “This all changed when the head coach of the Dutch National Team passed my details on to Andrew (Carter) and Jeff (Garbutt). I first received a message from Jeff and genuinely jumped out of my seat in excitement.

“I quickly began my research of the University of Iowa, only to discover the incredible creative writing program that it has to offer. After many hours of conversation with Andrew and Jeff and several conversations with Iowa alumni, I realized there is no better place for me to develop both as a rower and as a writer.”

Coach Carter on Doran: “Courtney has been rowing with one of the top school programs in Western Australia, which prepares her well to be part of a large and successful team. I think our programming, our roster, and our team culture are going to help Courtney reach new heights and that’s going to make her a serious contributor to the Hawkeye program. There’s clearly a solid foundation, but I think we’re only scratching the surface with Courtney. Give her a bit of time training at the next level and she’s going to achieve amazing things.”

Coach Carter on Stewart: “Eve is a really interesting prospect and we’re excited about her future. Despite being a little newer to rowing, Eve has already caught the attention of the national program in the Netherlands and she’s been placed on a fast-track development program. I know she’s going to do really well here and I’m not only looking forward to the contribution she’ll be making to Iowa, but also to the prospect of working closely with the Dutch program to ensure she’s reaching her high-performance potential.”
