MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team participated in the third day of the Gopher Invite Saturday afternoon. Day 3 consisted of two doubles rounds and a singles round. The Hawkeyes finished the day 5-2 in singles and 4-2 in doubles, with two Hawkeyes advancing to the singles championships.
“It was a good Day 3,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “I was proud of the team fighting for some competitive matches in singles and doubles.”
Freshman Elise van Heuvelen, and sophomore Adorabol Huckleby will both play in championship matches tomorrow afternoon. Van Heuvelen continued her undefeated play in singles matches, defeating Iowa State’s Regina Espindoal, 6-3, 6-2.
Huckleby also continued her winning ways, defeating Andrea Martinovska in three sets. The sophomore dropped the first set, 6-1, but followed with a 6-3 win in the second set, and a 1-0 win in the third match to advance to the championship round of her flight.
Anastasia Reimchen defeated Ellie Burns from South Dakota to advance to the fifth place match. Montanna Crawford and Carin Renfelt also had victories today in the singles matches.
The doubles team of Van Heuvelen and Zoe Douglas won two matches today. The duo took down University of South Dakota, 6-2, in their first match, and defeated San Jose State, 7-5, in their second match. Van Heuvelen and Douglas are now 5-1 for the tournament in doubles play.
The fourth and final day of the Gopher Invite is Sunday. There will be two rounds starting at 9 a.m. (CT), and one round of singles following the conclusion of the doubles matches at 11 a.m.
