EVANSTON, Illinois — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened play at the Wildcat Invite Friday afternoon. Day 1 of the tournament consisted of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
“It was a good first day here at Northwestern,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “We learned a lot from today and we are looking forward to building on it tomorrow.”
The doubles team of freshman Elise van Heuvelen and junior Zoe Douglas defeated Pittsburg’s double team, 6-1, and Kentucky’s doubles team, 6-4. The team of van Heuvelen and Douglas is now 8-1 in the fall season.
“I thought Zoe and Elise’s win over a good Kentucky team in doubles was especially good and a strong level of tennis,” said Schimd.
The doubles teams of Adorabol Huckleby and Carin Runefelt, and Montana Crawford and Taylor Tamblyn each won their first matches of doubles. Huckelby and Runefelt defeated Eastern Michigan’s, 7-6, and Crawford and Tamblyn defeated Eastern Michigan, 6-2.
van Heuvelen defeated Pati Lancranjan from DePaul, 7-5, 6-2. The freshman remains undefeated in singles play with a 5-0 record.
Sophomore Taylor Tamblyn and junior Montana Crawford also recorded singles victories today. Tamblyn defeated Norte Dame’s Hayden Siegfried, 6-4, 6-2. Crawford defeated Stefana Vasic from University of Chicago Illinois, 6-3, 6-3.
The Hawkeyes participate in the second day of The Wildcat Invite. First round matches begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
