IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team is sending eight Hawkeyes to participate in the ITA Central Regionals this weekend in Minneapolis.
“There is going to be some really good competition at this tournament,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “This will be a good comparison for our team to see where we stand against some of the best teams in the nation.”
Seven Hawkeyes — Elise van Heuvelen, Anastasia Reimchen, Zoe Douglas, Adorabol Huckleby, Aimee Tarun, Carin Runefelt, and Montana Crawford – are competing in singles competitions.
The Hawkeyes are also sending four doubles team to Minnesota, the teams of van Heuvelen and Douglas, Tarun and Huckleby, Runefelt and Crawford, and Kristen Thoms and Reimchen.
The tournament begins Thursday and ends with the championship matches being played Monday. The doubles round of 64 (32 matches) and first round of singles (64 matches) will all be played Thursday.
The second day of the tournament consists of the doubles round of 32 (16 matches), followed by the second (32 matches) and third (16 matches) rounds of singles. Consolation matches also begin Friday.
Saturday features the doubles round of 16 followed by the doubles quarterfinals and the singles round of 16. Consolation matches are played Saturday evening.
The doubles semifinals, and the singles quarterfinals and semifinals follow the conclusion of doubles play on Sunday. The tournament concludes Monday with the doubles and singles finals.
“We are just looking to continue to build off of our previous tournaments,” said Schimd. “This tournament is important because it is a qualifier for nationals.”
