Hawkeyes Complete Day Two of ITA Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team competed at the ITA Central Regionals Friday. The second day of the tournament consisted of singles and doubles matches.
 
“Tough for us to be on the short end of some hard fought matches today,” said UI head coach Sasha Schimd. “The team really competed well and I’m proud of them. We are encouraged but not satisfied. We are excited to get more chances to compete tomorrow.”
 
Senior Zoe Douglas, sophomore Carin Runefelt, and junior Montana Crawford all won singles matches Friday.
 
Douglas defeated Lexi Aranda in straight sets 6-4, 7-4. The junior advanced to the round of 32 where she lost in three sets.
 
Runefelt and Crawford both won consolation matches. Runefelt defeated Amina Ismail from Creighton in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0. Crawford defeated Southern Illinois University’s Ana Sofia Cordero in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 1-0.
 
The doubles team of Douglas and Elise van Heuvelen defeated the doubles team of Mbalia Bangoura and Vasanti Shinde from Nebraska, 8-4.
 
The Hawkeyes continue the ITA Central Regional tournament action tomorrow. The third day of the tournament consists of singles and doubles matches
