MADISON, Wis. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team saw six student-athletes advance to the quarterfinals in singles play and three doubles teams advance at day one of the Big Ten Indoor Championships held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
 
Senior Robin Haden defeated Penn State’s Marc Collado, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the second round where he won, 6-1, 7-6(9), over Riley Reist of Ohio State.
 
Junior Josh Silverstein won in straight sets over Nebraska senior Chris Schindler, 6-3, 6-0. In second round play, Oliver Sec of Indiana retired in the second set to advance Silverstein to the quarterfinals of the bottom bracket.
 
In his first tournament of the fall season, junior Lefteris Theodorou beat Tomislav Antoljak of Nebraska, 7-5, 7-5, and Matthew McCoy of Indiana, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
In doubles, three Hawkeye teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
 
Theodorou/Silverstein defeated Jesse/Landa of Illinois, 6-1, and Kohan/Gordon of Penn State, 6-3. Haden and junior Jake Jacoby won, 6-3, over Indiana’s Cembellin/Sec and, 6-2, over Wisconsin’s Mackenzie/Soyfer. Sophomore Jonas Larsen and redshirt freshmen Kareem Allaf beat Clark/Gomes of Illinois, 6-2, and O’hoisin/Zordani Michigan State, 7-6(8).
 
Senior Nils Hallestrand teamed with freshman Jason Kerst to advance to the second round by default. The duo fell to McCoy/Brodney of Indiana, 7-6(6) in the Round of 16.
 
Jacoby won his first round singles match over John Zordani of Wisconsin, 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-2, but dropped a three-set decision to Ohio State’s Matt Mendez, in the second round. Larsen won, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, over Henry Gordon of Penn State, but fell, 7-5, 6-3, to Northwestern’s Jason Seidman in the Round of 32. Allaf beat Vuk Budic of Illinois, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, but lost to Wisconsin’s Josef Dodridge, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7).
 
Hallestrand, Kerst, and sophomore Tony Leto, all dropped their first round singles matches.
 
Doubles action will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday followed by the singles Round of 16 around noon (CT).
