ON THE MAT
The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team hosts Iowa State on Saturday in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.  The dual begins at 7 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Mat at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
      Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for youth (high school age and younger). UI students and children five-years-old and younger are admitted free, but everyone must have a ticket.

DAN GABLE TRAVELING TROPHY
The Iowa-Iowa State wrestling rivalry introduced the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy in 2010.
      In a joint collaboration, the schools announced the annual dual would be wrestled for a trophy representing Iowa State’s former two-time NCAA Champion and Iowa’s 15-time NCAA championship coach.
      Iowa has won every meeting since the trophy’s inception (6-0), including a 22-13 win at home in 2010, a 27-9 win in Ames in 2011, a 32-3 win in Iowa City in 2012, a 23-9 win in Ames in 2013, a 28-8 win in 2014, and a 33-6 win in Ames last season. 
 
THE SERIES
Iowa leads Iowa State, 62-16-2, in the all-time series, and has won the last 12 meetings. The Hawkeyes are 31-5-1 all-time against the Cyclones in Iowa City.
      Iowa State’s last win in the series was 19-16 on Dec. 5, 2004, in Iowa City. Iowa has won five in a row at home, and 28 of the last 29. Overall, Iowa has won 52 of the last 56 meetings.
 
IOWA CORN CY-HAWK SERIES
The Cy-Hawk Series is in its 13th season in 2016-17, being sponsored for the sixth time by Iowa Corn.
      The Cyclones lead the season series, 6-5, having secured wins in volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. The Hawkeyes earned wins in football and soccer.
      Iowa State leads the all-time series, 6-5-1, after a 12-12 tie in the series in 2015-16,
      Iowa wrestling owns an 11-1 lead in the Cy-Hawk Series duals. The Cyclones won the first meeting in 2004, and Iowa has won the last 11. (Iowa has won 12 straight overall, including a meeting at the National Duals.)
 
IOWA NATIVES
The Hawkeyes have six native Iowans in their probable lineup, including Thomas Gilman (Council Bluffs), Phillip Laux (Brighton), Brandon Sorensen (Cedar Falls), Alex Meyer (Pleasant Hill), Cash Wilcke (Battle Creek), and Steven Holloway (West Burlington)
      The Cyclones have six native Iowans in their probable lineup. Three matches — 125, 149, and 197 — could pit Iowa native against Iowa native.
      The Hawkeyes have 19 total Iowa natives on their roster. The Cyclones have 20.
 
CY-HAWK EXPERIENCE
Sammy Brooks is making his fourth Cy-Hawk Series appearance. He wrestled at 184 in 2014 and 2015, and wrestled at 197 as a redshirt freshman in 2013. Brooks lost his Cy-Hawk debut to All-American Kyven Gadson, 3-2, in 2013. He defeated Lelund Weatherspoon, 9-1, at 184 pounds in Iowa City in 2014, and pinned Dane Pestano in 6:45 in 2015.
      Thomas Gilman and Brandon Sorensen are making their third appearances in the series. Both wrestlers are 2-0. Gilman defeated Kyle Larson, 6-1, in 2014, and 12-3, in 2015. Sorensen defeated Gabe Moreno, 7-6, in 2014, and 11-3, in 2015.
      Alex Meyer is the only other Hawkeye probable with Cy-Hawk experience. Meyer defeated Weatherspoon, 7-1, in 2015.
      Cory Clark, who is not listed among Iowa’s probables, is 3-0 all-time in the Cy-Hawk Series with three wins over Earl Hall (8-7 in 2013, 8-3 in 2014, 9-2 in 2015). Clark had started 32 consecutive duals before missing the South Dakota State dual on Dec. 2.
 
BRANDS 11, IOWA STATE 0
University of Iowa head coach Tom Brands is 11-0 all-time against Iowa State. During that stretch, the Hawkeyes have won by an average of 15.6 points per dual, outscoring Iowa State, 286-125. The slimmest margin of victory over the last 10 meetings was an 18-16 win in Ames in 2009. The largest margin of victory was a 32-3 win in Iowa City in 2012.

CY-HAWK SERIES DRAWS A CROWD
Four of the top five wrestling crowds at Carver-Hawkeye Arena have gathered for the Iowa-Iowa State dual.
      The Hawkeyes and Cyclones set a then-NCAA attendance record when 15,955 witnessed top-ranked Iowa defeat Iowa State, 20-15, on Dec. 6, 2008. Iowa assistant coach Ryan Morningstar, ranked No. 9 in the country at 165, upset Iowa State’s second-ranked Jon Reader, 2-0, in front of the packed house.
      The Cyclones have been involved in 19 of the top 25 crowds at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes are 17-1-1 in those duals.
 
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION… WELCOME ALL CHALLENGERS
The third-ranked Hawkeyes ring in the new year with a schedule that includes top-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 2 Penn State, and No. 4 Ohio State. Iowa will wrestle all three opponents in that order, beginning Jan. 15 at Oklahoma State. The Nittany Lions visit Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Jan. 20, and one week later the Buckeyes are in town for a Friday night dual on Jan. 27.
      Single dual tickets are $15/$10 (adult/youth) for duals against Iowa State (Dec. 10), Penn State (Jan. 20), and Ohio State (Jan. 27). 
 
HAWKEYE WRESTLING HISTORY
Iowa’s overall dual meet record is 978-226-31 (.799) in 107 seasons. The Hawkeyes have won 23 national titles and 35 Big Ten titles. Iowa’s 53 NCAA Champions have won a total of 81 NCAA individual titles, crowning six three-time and 16 two-time champions. The Hawkeyes’ 111 Big Ten champions have combined for 197 conference titles. There have been seven four-time, 18 three-time, and 29 two-time Big Ten champions from Iowa.
      Iowa’s 154 All-Americans have earned All-America status 319 times, including 18 four-time, 36 three-time and 40 two-time honorees.
 
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS
Seniors Thomas Gilman and Cory Clark are both ranked No. 1 at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
      Both wrestlers placed runner-up at the 2016 NCAA Championships and both have opened the 2016-17 season with undefeated records. Gilman is 7-0 with five falls and two technical falls. Clark is 7-0 with four pins and a technical fall. Collectively, Gilman and Clark are 167-23 (.878) all-time.
      The Hawkeyes are one of three schools to have two top-rated wresters according to Intermat. The others include Penn State (Zain Retherford 149, Jason Nolf 149) and Ohio State (Bo Jordan 174, Kyle nyder 285). Both schools visit Carver-Hawkeye Arena in January.
