Okatie, S.C. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team kicked off its spring break with an 18-hole dual win over No. 32 Michigan State on Sunday at the Chechessee Creek Club. The Hawkeyes posted a team total of 363 (+13), counting the best five scores of six players.
The Hawkeyes finished six shots ahead of the Spartans (369; +19). Senior Raymond Knoll claimed medalist honors with an even-par 70.
“Ray played a great round in tough conditions,” said UI head coach Tyler Stith. “He didn’t make a bogey until the 18th hole. He showed a lot of patience and discipline.”
Freshman Alex Schaake followed Knoll, posting a one-over-par 71 to tie for second. Sophomore Matthew Walker (72; +2) and senior Carson Schaake (73: +3) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while freshman Ryoto Furuya rounded out Iowa’s team total contributing a 77 (+7) to finish tied for ninth.
“Overall, we’re pleased with today’s result,” added Stith. “We drove the ball well and converted several important up and downs.”
The Hawkeyes return to action in Statesboro, Georgia, for the annual Schenkel Invitational March 17-19 hosted by Georgia Southern.
