TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Iowa track and field team completed their first outdoor meet of the year at the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes ended the second day of competition with three gold medals and a couple all-time marks. Saturday began in familiar fashion with a third-straight event title going back to yesterday’s competition.
Senior Avery Meyers and sophomore Reno Tuufuli highlighted the men’s discus throw. Meyers set a personal-best with a throw of 54.19m (177 feet, 9 ¼ inches). He finished fifth. Tuufuli claimed the gold medal in the event. He recorded a throw of 59.04m (193 feet, 8 ¼ inches).
“What got us started was the discus throw in the morning,” UI director of track and field Joey Woody said. “Avery had a big PR and Reno had a big opener for this time in the season. That mark for him was five meters further than he threw at this meet last year.”
The women’s 400m relay team won their event with a time of 44.34. That time ranks second all-time behind the school record relay that was set last year. Guillory and Hernandez were on that relay as well.
While the men’s team placed fifth all-time in Iowa history with a time of 39.49 in their 400m relay.
“Both the men and women had really good outings,” Woody said. “The women won and beat some really good teams including Ohio State and they are always a good relay team. Brittany Brown had a awesome anchor leg. She chased down two teams.”
Iowa’s third event title of the day came in the 110m hurdles. Sophomore Chris Douglas posted a time of 14.40 to place first in the event. Junior William Dougherty also set a personal-best with a time of 15.03.
Senior Will Teubel, who redshirted this past indoor season, placed fourth in the 800m with a time of 1:49.24.
“Will had a great opener and it might be his best 800m opener ever,” Woody said. “It’s good for him to get out there and compete. That should get him to the first round of the national meet with that time.”
The Hawkeyes are off next week and return to competition at the Stanford Invitational and Florida Relays on March 31.
