IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated No. 50 Wichita State, 4-3, on Monday at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex. The win marks Iowa’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2014. The win improves the Hawkeyes’ overall record to 15-6.

“Today was a great team win,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “We are grateful for the opportunity to play a quality team like Wichita State on a late addition to our schedule. It is always valuable to go through a 3-3 match situation and today was a great competitive effort from Dori to play well and close out the match for the team victory.”

Iowa, winners of two straight matches, started the afternoon taking the doubles point. Freshman Elise van Heuvelen and sophomore Adorabol Huckleby defeated Fatima Bizhukova and Gabriela Porubin, 6-4, at the No. 1 doubles position. Senior Aimee Tarun and junior Montana Crawford took the No. 3 doubles match, 6-4, bouncing Giulia Guidetti and Marta Bellucco to clinch the doubles point for Iowa.

Junior Zoe Douglas kept the momentum going for the Hawkeyes in singles action, defeating Porubin in straight sets, 6-3 6-1, at the No. 2 spot to give Iowa a 2-0 match advantage.

Van Heuvelen notched a win at No. 1, taking down Guidetti in straight sets, 6-3 6-2, to extend the Hawkeyes’ lead to 3-1.

Huckleby won the last set of the match in a third set. She defeated Marta Bellucco, 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3, to secure the victory for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes return to the court next weekend. Iowa faces No. 8 Michigan at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday in Ann Arbor, and Michigan State at 11 a.m. (CT) Sunday in East Lansing.
