AZUSA, Calif. – Junior Will Dougherty broke his own school record in the decathlon during the opening days of the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday.

Dougherty piled 7,471 points during the two-day competition to reset his own school record that he set previously at last year’s Big Ten Championships. He now ranks second in the Big Ten behind Minnesota’s Luca Wieland, who won the event.

Dougherty also set personal bests in seven of the 10 events including shot put (14.35 meters), 100 meters (11.04), 400 meters (49.85), high jump (1.96 meters), 110 meter hurdles (14.99), pole vault (4.50 meters), and javelin throw (52.26 meters).

During the indoor season, Dougherty set a school record in the heptathlon, scoring 5,504 points at the Big Ten Championships. He has broken a school record in three of the past four multi event competitions he has competed in dating back to last season.

The Mt. SAC Relays continue with running and field events beginning tomorrow and concluding Saturday in Torrance, California, on the campus of El Camino College. Friday’s first event is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (CT).
