MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — University of Iowa freshman Yufei Long scored an upset in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Saturday.
Long, the No. 7 seed in the singles bracket, worked overtime to upset No. 2 Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals, but her bid to reach the finals was stopped in the semifinals by No. 4 Miranda Ramirez of Syracuse, 6-2, 6-4.
Long later dropped an 8-4 decision in semifinals of the doubles bracket. She and junior Adorabol Huckleby, the No. 3 seed, were bounced from the tournament by No. 2 seed Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze of North Texas.
Senior Montana Crawford and freshman Danielle Burich also dropped decisions Saturday. Crawford fell in the consolation bracket, and Burich lost in the championship quarterfinals.
The Hawkeyes return to action at the ITA All-American on Sept. 30 in Los Angeles. Senior Zoe Douglas and sophomore Elise van Heuvelen compete in the pre-qualifying singles tournament and the qualifying doubles tournament.
