Hawkeyes Finish Road Trip with 3-2 Loss at Michigan State

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa soccer team finished its road trip with a 3-2 loss at Michigan State (5-8-0, 1-5-0) on Sunday afternoon at the DeMartin Soccer Complex.  The Hawkeyes fall to 5-5-1, 0-2-1 in Big Ten action.
 
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, the Hawkeyes got on the board in the 23rd minute when senior Karly Stuenkel sunk her first goal of the season with assistance from freshman Morgan Krause and sophomore Devin Burns.
 
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Michigan State grabbed a 2-1 advantage before Iowa netted the equalizer less than two minutes later.  Sophomore Hannah Drkulec sent a header into the net off a cross from redshirt sophomore Kaleigh Haus.  It was Drkulec’s first career goal.
 
Michigan State’s Jamie Cheslik gave the Spartans the lead at the 67:47 mark, firing in a shot from 18-yards out.
 
The Hawkeyes out-shot Michigan State, 18-10, and had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. 
 
KEY HAWKEYE PERFORMER
Senior Karly Stuenkel scored her first goal of the season. The Illinois native has 11 goals as a Hawkeye.

“It was a difficult loss to accept today. The team competed all game, which is a big positive on a Friday and Sunday weekend. But we aren’t doing enough to help ourselves out for long enough periods of time all over the field and today it cost us three points.”
